In which a two day committee meeting makes a big decision, I visit The Royal Society Summer Science Exhibition and touch Moon rock, attend the Henley Royal Regatta, catch up with a ex-staff Member for luncheon, travel to Sheffield and find the worst hotel in England, discover my dog has excellent bladder control, and try to explain cricket to a Canadian.
In a slightly extended episode I welcome the croquet season, despair at my increasing weight having returned to the gym, fail to follow or understand a briefing on what constitutes ‘fake news’, travel to Kenya for the first time, experience British Airways First Class, deliver some lectures on leadership in Kenya, experience my first safari, and enjoy the best sleep ever on an aircraft.
This week my theme is service and duty, I talk about the challenges of volunteering, apps to help with packing for travel, my attending a D Day Service, taking part in a charity golf tournament, and my experience of watching a TV programme called Love Island. I foolishly began today by studying my Fitbit app and looking at my bodyweight. I started monitoring it on 26 November 2018 when I calculated that for a man of my age (57) and height/build (5ft 10”) I was 16 lbs overweight. I made a conscious commitment to myself last year to acquire less clothes and accessories this year, and focus instead upon building a classic foundation to my wardrobe. I have long admired the style of the 1920, 1930s – the so-called “golden era” of men’s fashion – so I naturally turn to this period for inspiration, using the many photographs and images available online. In particular I have collected a significant number of drawings made by Laurence Fellows – one section of my Pinterest account is principally dedicated to this collection. Looking through this growing array of beautiful images one of the more consistent and prevalent styles of the era is the loose fit, doubled front pleats, with turn ups (cuffs in America) cream (think vintage cricket flannels) or white trousers.
